Which Topical Treatments Complement a Beard Transplant Most Effectively?

Medical Overview

A beard transplant involves moving healthy follicular units—typically from the scalp—to areas of the face where beard density is lacking. At My Hair UK, all beard transplants are priced at a fixed £2,899, provided they can be completed in one day. This approach offers predictable costs and is among the most affordable options in the UK. While the surgical technique is central to results, post-operative topical care also plays a role in graft survival, healing, and long-term hair density.

Topical Agents and Graft Healing

After surgery, the skin enters a wound healing phase. It’s essential to avoid disrupting the new grafts in the first 7–10 days. During this time, we advise patients to keep the area clean, dry, and free of irritants. Beyond this acute phase, certain topical agents can support recovery:

  • Hyaluronic acid provides hydration and supports re-epithelialisation without blocking pores. A 2019 study in Dermatologic Surgery showed improved healing with topical hyaluronic acid.

  • Niacinamide offers anti-inflammatory benefits and helps repair the skin barrier, making it suitable for patients prone to irritation.

  • Peptide-based serums, particularly those containing copper peptides, may support follicular activity, though evidence remains limited.

We do not recommend medicated topical treatments immediately post-op without medical supervision, as these can trigger inflammation or disrupt healing.

The Role of Topical Minoxidil

Minoxidil is commonly used for beard growth, though it is unlicensed for this purpose in the UK. While it may increase hair shaft diameter and stimulate growth, its use immediately after a transplant is discouraged. Application too early may irritate the grafts or delay healing. Many patients also experience dryness or perioral dermatitis.

At My Hair UK, we do not advise using minoxidil post-transplant. Results from the surgery alone are usually sufficient. For patients with residual patchiness months later, a discussion around topical minoxidil may be appropriate—but only once the skin has fully healed.

Topical Finasteride and Beard Growth

Topical finasteride is being explored for its role in reducing DHT at the follicular level without significant systemic absorption. A 2020 study reported low plasma levels after use, suggesting a reduced risk of systemic effects.

That said, there is no strong evidence supporting its use for beard enhancement. Facial hair is generally less sensitive to DHT inhibition compared to scalp hair. We do not recommend topical finasteride for beard transplant patients at this time.

Final Thoughts

Topical care after a beard transplant should prioritise healing and skin integrity. Non-medicated options such as hyaluronic acid or niacinamide-based formulations can be helpful. Pharmacological agents like minoxidil and finasteride should only be considered well after healing, and under medical guidance.

At My Hair UK, we provide clear aftercare advice based on your skin type and goals. Our beard transplant procedure, performed in the UK by experienced surgeons, is priced at £2,899 with no hidden fees.
