OpenAI Looks across United States for Sites to Build Its Trump-backed Stargate

OpenAI is scouring the U.S. for sites to build a network of substantial information centers to power its synthetic intelligence technology, expanding beyond a flagship Texas location and looking across 16 states to speed up the Stargate job championed by President Donald Trump.

The maker of ChatGPT put out a demand for propositions for land, electrical power, engineers and designers and began going to areas in Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin today.

Trump promoted Stargate, a freshly formed joint venture between OpenAI, Oracle and Softbank, soon after returning to the White House last month.

The partnership said it is investing $100 billion – and eventually up to $500 billion – to build large-scale data centers and the energy generation required to further AI advancement. Trump called the task a „definite declaration of confidence in America ´ s possible“ under his new administration, though the first task in Abilene, Texas, has actually been under building and construction for months.

Elon Musk, a Trump consultant and intense competitor of OpenAI who remains in a legal battle with the company and its CEO Sam Altman, has publicly questioned the worth of Stargate’s financial investments.

After Trump’s statement, accc.rcec.sinica.edu.tw a number of states connected to OpenAI about inviting additional information centers, Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s vice president of worldwide affairs, told reporters Thursday.

The company’s request for proposals requires sites with „proximity to needed facilities consisting of power and water.“

AI uses large amounts of energy, much of which comes from burning fossil fuels, which causes environment change. Data centers also generally draw in big of water for cooling. Some tech giants have begun funding nuclear power to plug into their data centers.

OpenAI’s proposition makes no reference of whether it intends to prioritize sustainable energy sources such as wind or solar to power the information centers. But it states electrical power providers must have a strategy to handle carbon emissions and water use.

„There ´ s some websites we ´ re taking a look at where we wish to assist become part of the procedure that brings brand-new power to that website, either from new gas implementation or other ways,“ said Keith Heyde, who directs OpenAI ´ s infrastructure technique.

The very first Texas project remains in an area Abilene Mayor Weldon Hurt has explained to The Associated Press as abundant in numerous energy sources, consisting of wind, solar and gas. Also explaining it that way is the company that started developing the AI information center school there in June – the very same two „huge, beautiful buildings“ that Altman revealed off in a current drone video posted on social networks.

Crusoe CEO Chase Lochmiller said that wind power is main to the job his company is developing, though it will likewise have a gas-fired generator for backup power.

„We try to develop information centers in places where we can access inexpensive, tidy and plentiful energy resources,“ Lochmiller said. „West Texas actually fits that mold where it’s one of the most regularly windy and warm locations in the United States.“

Lochmiller said he expects the Trump administration, regardless of the president’s opposition to wind farms, accc.rcec.sinica.edu.tw to be pragmatic in supporting wind-powered information centers when it is „in fact the most inexpensive way to gain access to energy.“

Data centers taken in about 4.4% of all U.S. electrical energy in 2023 and that ´ s anticipated to increase to 6.7% to 12% of total U.S. electrical energy by 2028, according to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The other states where OpenAI is actively looking include Arizona, asteroidsathome.net California, Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Utah, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia. Heyde said the company just plans to build „somewhere between 5 to 10“ campuses in total, depending on how big every one is.

OpenAI formerly relied on business partner Microsoft for its computing requires. But the 2 companies just recently modified their collaboration to make it possible for OpenAI to pursue data center development by itself.

Associated Press writer Jamey Keaten added to this report.

The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and innovation agreement that enables OpenAI access to part of AP ´ s text archives.
